We are all creatures of habit . . . it's part of what makes us who we are!
Granted some people live more "habit-driven" than others, but overall I think we can all say that when we have good systems/habits in place, life runs more smoothly.
But what about those habits that aren't so great? Things we've been doing for so long they don't even show up as a blip on the habit radar? You know the ones:
MY CELL PHONE
I swear this thing is like an extra limb/body part. When I was on vacation last month, I really tried to pay attention to unplugging both from social media and the device . . . with only mixed results.
But that thought stayed with me after we got home, and even though I know it isn't good for me, I was having a hard time putting the phone away, especially at night. I think the origins of this attachment were well intentioned. Not only do I use it as an alarm clock, but since I left my marriage eight years ago, I was committed to making sure that my kids be able to reach me, no matter what time of day or night in case they needed something. So at that time I think it was actually a good thing - and I have no regrets.
Here's my reality today: My older son is a freshman in college in Colorado - four big states away. As such, even if I get a text or a call in the middle of the night, practically speaking I won't be able to do anything about it until morning. So that's just not a good excuse any more. As for my other boy? He's almost 16 and totally on-board with my new "no cell-phone in the bedroom" plan - so if there's a true emergency, he knows to call his Dad or 911, and I'll be in touch in the morning. Check!
Which leaves the alarm clock. I bought a new one:
The truth is I've been trying to detach from my phone for a long time, and was recently inspired by my friend Abby who has done a bunch of research on EMF's (Electro-Magnetic Fields), and all the crazy internet waves that come off your cell phone and how they impact your sleep and health. (And I'm totally OK if y'all think I've lost my sh*t at this point - lol!). If you do a Google search, you'll find a lot of different information, and at least 50% of the sites will also be trying to sell you something - which can be disconcerting. But I decided to look past the information overload and give it a whirl as an experiment, to see what kind of results I'd get.
I'm one week + two days into it . . . and here's what I know:
