Last week I spent six days in Nicaragua - where I was onsite to assist at a coaching retreat held by my friend and client Courtney. It was a long weekend filled with adventures (a boat tour on Lake Nicaragua, lunch on a private island, yoga at the edge of a volcanic crater lake <--- that was amazing!), tasty food (hello vegan brownie, where have you been all my life?) ten fantastic women (no really, I'd happily spend an afternoon with any of them - they are so lovely), and a handful of life lessons. Because that's just what happens when you're at a personal growth retreat - even in the role of "Hospitality Goddess".
For starters, I'd just like to say that I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest - and am still a happy resident of Seattle, WA. Which means . . . I have a comfortable body temperature window of like five degrees. It's no joke people - I'm happiest when it's between 73 and 78 degrees outside. Less than that? I'm cold. More than that? Yep . . . I'm too warm.
So it should come as no surprise to you that Nicaragua and it's 88 degree heat + 87% humidity was a bit of a shock to my system. (And my hair! Dang.) I seriously felt like I was melting every time I left my air-conditioned room - and wearing 60 spf sunscreen just added one more layer to the sweaty equation. And the one thing that just kept coming out of my mouth was:
I know - not terribly original - but it was all I could muster.
Well after about a day of this, Courtney said to me, "I think we need to change your Mantra". LOL!! (This is the beauty of working exclusively with other Life Coaches - it's a great environment to have a gentle reminder of our humanity when we need one.) So in that moment I decided instead to say:
"I'm having an amazing adventure!"
Because that was in fact the truth, and saying it didn't make me hotter. Ha!
With my new Mantra I also surrendered to what I'd been resisting (you know the feeling when that drip of sweat is finding its' way down your back - oy!), and just decided to be one with the weather. Because as Byron Katie likes to say, "That's God's Business" - i.e. I have no control over it. I also made time to get in the pool since that was where I could really get refreshed - and it was lovely.
Since I came home I've been forced to slow down due to some back issues - and I've surrendered to that too. Old Mantra: "I don't feel good." New Mantra: "I am listening to my body and taking care of myself."
Navigating a Virtual Assistant mistake this week? Old Mantra: "I suck." New Mantra: "I am a Lifelong Learner."
I'm so grateful for the reminder that I can shift my thinking and what I actually say, ever so slightly - and create a more positive outcome.
What are your mantras? Are they intentional and positive? Or do you sometimes find yourself with your own version of "I'm Hot" that might need a little adjusting? I'd love to hear (either way!) - send me a note or leave a comment below.
