I've been having a dental issue this week y'all - which is forcing me to look at the fact that I don't have dental insurance squarely in the face. Let me just say . . . it has been no fun!
In fact, it has caused me to slip into a giant state of worry questioning - which looks something like this:
Many years ago I used to joke that worrying was my superpower. (I cringe to admit that, and these days claim things more fun and positive like parallel parking and jigsaw puzzles as my true superpowers!) But that old affinity with constant worry is what caused me to almost fall out of my chair a couple of months ago when I saw this written in Jen Sincero's money book:
That just put a whole new spin on something I'd already been trying to have more self-awareness around. From a law-of-attraction standpoint, what we focus on grows . . . so spending lots of time worrying about things (that most of the time we have absolutely no control over anyway) - it just a big fat waste of time. Oy!
So how did I get myself out of the root-canal-doomed worry pit?
I started by asking myself one of my favorite questions: What's the worst thing that could happen? (Perspective folks . . . it's a good thing!) And the answer to that was that it might be expensive, and I'd probably be able to figure out some way to pay for it.
Next up I remembered that it is open enrollment for health & dental insurance for a few more weeks, so I looked online at some dental plans - which are remarkably well-priced!
Lastly I took a moment to be kind and gentle with myself when I realized that some of the panic around my sore tooth was because I had the thought "It's irresponsible that I don't have dental insurance." <--- Yes it's true, even Life Coaches have weird limiting beliefs (ha!) . . . but nothing a little dose of Byron Katie's "The Work" couldn't help solve. (Is it True? No.)
And with that I felt remarkably zen about the whole thing. My tooth is still a little ache-y, but my brain is at peace. What a relief!
Are you a worry-wart? How do you navigate something scary on the horizon without going off the worrying-deep-end? I'd love for you to share your anti-worry tools . . . one can never have enough in the toolbox!
