Earlier this year at a retreat I was asked to reflect on my "morning routine" - which pretty much sent me into a small panic. Because the answer at the time was, I don't have one! Let me be honest: I have to be at work four days a week at 7:00 a.m. It's a 25 minute drive to get there, and on some days I have to drive my kid 20 minutes in the opposite direction first. Throw into the mix that it takes me about an hour to get ready . . . once you do the math it just doesn't leave a lot of room for yoga or morning pages a la Julia Cameron. If you're picking up what I'm putting down . . .
(I know that many of you are no stranger to this particular dilemma. How exactly do we squeeze even 5, 10, 15 more minutes of time out of our days that are already so full?)
But there I was (in Mexico no less!) - being given time to really think about it - and after a bit I realized I did have a morning routine! And what was even better was that it was taking me less than 5 minutes a day to do it. Basically I was practicing Pam Grout's AA2.0 concept every morning:
But wait . . . there's MORE!
In what can only be described as a Christmas Miracle, I have recently started practicing meditation. Yep - I'm getting up 1/2 an hour earlier every day (something that I thought was literally impossible), and integrating 20 minutes of meditation into my morning.
Additionally for the last few weeks on Tuesdays (when I don't have to go to work), my son and I have been getting up early anyway, and going to the gym. An hour of cardio & strength training along with the This American Life podcast? It. Is. Awesome.
This past Tuesday I got home by 8:00 a.m. (having meditated and exercised) and was just listening to the very end of my podcast as I walked outside in the sunshine - and all of a sudden I had a feeling of what can only be described as pure JOY. <--- With that, I've come to the conclusion that my morning routine (no matter what it looks like on which day of the week), is non-negotiable. Because you can't put a price on happy.
Do you have a morning routine? Have you made it non-negotiable time? How does it impact your day? I'm so curious to hear what other peoples' morning rituals look like . . . send me a note or leave a comment here!
Love & Light,
p.s. I probably should have entitled this: How I Stumbled Into my Morning Routine, as it wasn't particularly graceful - but it seems like that's kind of how I do things. And since the end result has been good - I don't think the "how" really matters. :)
