I have a little bit of a love-hate relationship with social media. Yes I love Instagram . . . as a photographer it's my favorite! Facebook seems like a different way to share my Instagram posts and kid updates, as well as promote my coaching on my business page - though I don't love it quite as much. Snapchat? I can't figure it out - even though my teenagers have tried to teach me on multiple occasions. I love the filters for the photos, but I could take or leave the rest - I just don't "get it".
But what I find most interesting about social media is how we present ourselves there - and how I've discovered that there isn't just one way that works for everyone! (I know - giant surprise.) Here is what I've observed:
We generally only share good things on social media. Which is fine in theory - but a) it's not really real, and b) it creates a weird sense to your readers that everything is great in your life! All the time! (And that in turn is actually kind of depressing.)
By contrast, some people over-share things that are not so good. I had one person in my circle in particular who shared a lot of detailed difficult medical information on Facebook and I realized over time that I just did not want to read about it! How's that for a double standard?
So back to this idea about how we share ourselves, our lives, our experiences on social media - compared to what's really going on . . . I've come up with a new goal for myself:
I am going to try present a closer version of my "real" self in my "ideal" space. So if you run into me in a coffee shop someday - you'll see someone who looks pretty close to who you see online. Will it be perfect? Errr - not likely. But I think with a small amount of effort I can share the same person live as on social media. I'm excited!
What about you - do you struggle with your online presence? Is there a big divide between your "ideal" and "real" selves? How do you feel about social media and the way you show up? I'd love to hear - leave a comment or send me a note!
