Several weeks ago I mentioned that I was learning about meditation. Folks - I've been "learning about meditation" for a loooong time, but I have finally (finally!) found my way around the resistance and am working up to 10-15 minutes per day. Look at me GO!
Given that I'm 46 years old, and have known about the benefits of meditation for at least 15 years (?), I think it's fair to admit that I was massively resistant. So how does one go from "massively resistant" to a small practice about five days a week? Apparently very slowly!
A few insights into my journey:
I tried to meditate (on my own, with little or no guidance) years ago. I lasted about two minutes before I was thinking about all the things I had to do, and what groceries we needed for dinner. If memory serves me correctly I was also kneeling and my legs were killing me. Talk about a swift way to give-up before I had even started . . . from that point on I decided that meditation wasn't for me, and I was "bad at it."
At some point I did download a meditation app onto my phone, thinking that guided meditation might be more helpful. That didn't work out either.
But ever so slowly this year, I decided to get curious about meditation again. This was in part due to the fact that . . .
So I bought Soul Centered (a meditation book Courtney recommended), and read through the first chapter. (Have I shared that I'm kind of allergic to self-help books, unless they're really funny? This one is not funny.) I got stalled.
But this time my stall was only for a few weeks, before I was reading another book (Jen Sincero's YOU ARE A BADASS at Making Money), which talks about meditation and how it is a key to manifesting the green stuff. She is hilarious . . . so I listened and decided to revisit the app I mentioned above - HeadSpace.
According to the app I signed up two years ago, and I had made it through days 1-3 of the first 10 days of guided meditations - which are FREE. Whoopsy! I decided to give it another go - and within just a couple of days made it to the point where I decided to sign up for a whole year. Weeeee!
This time around I think I'm GETTING IT! And honestly I think a big part of that comes from being kind and gentle with myself, and not freaking out if I think about the fact that I need groceries along the way. Today I just acknowledge those thoughts, and re-focus on my breathing. It's Not. That. Hard. (Picked up the book again too - onto Chapter Two . . . #slowandsteady).
