With the start of the New Year and embracing 2017, I've had several oppportunities to examine my values as a way of getting more clarity on how I want to live my life.
This exercise isn't completely new to me, but it's been so good to re-examine what my values are, and think about the questions posed as I jumped into the task, particularly this one: "Are these my principles, based on what I value deeply today, or did I inherit them?" (Thank You Lin Eleoff!) Because not only are some values imposed on us by our families, but they can change over time - which is why I think it's good to look at them every couple of years or so. If you need some help getting started, here are two good values lists. After looking them over - here are the values I most identified with . . . Alignment, Awareness, Bliss, Community, Connection, Courage, Creativity, Economic Security, Emotional Well-Being, Family, Feeling Good, Freedom, Friendship, Guts, Grit, Grace, Happiness, Health, Honesty, Inspiration, Integrity, Joy, Kindness, Laughter, Love, Play, Positive Attitude, Presence, Self-Awareness, Service, Strength, Vision. BOOM! It's a great little project to really take a look and write down the words that most resonate with you - but then how do you remember them all? You create a VISION STATEMENT! I actually did this years ago, and what I love about it so much is that when I dug it up this week - it's still pretty much spot on. And with that I am sharing with you my short and long vision statements - circa 2009! Short Vision Statement: I am nurturing, creative and true. Living My Vision Is . . . I ask for what I want and stand up for what I believe in - integrity shows through in all that I do. I maintain a home that is comfortable & inviting for me, my family and my friends - equally a sanctuary for quiet reflection as it is a gathering place for lively entertaining. I embrace motherhood - using intuition & wisdom to teach my children, accepting they will learn from me and follow their own path. I choose work that has meaning and purpose, aware that my efforts are working toward the greater good. I create abundance for myself, allowing me to fulfill my dreams of travel and adventure. I volunteer for causes that are dear to my heart, knowing that being in service to others is a gift. I acknowledge my spirituality by going to church, and reading work by authors that enlighten me. I nurture my creativity, taking photographs, writing & following other artistic pursuits. I exercise and eat healthy foods, honoring my body and all that it does for me. I show up fully & speak my truth - creating quality relationships. And I always remember that Gratitude is that fastest way "home". (In this case "home" refers to that inner peace you find in your core - where all is calm & happy & bright . . . you know what I mean!) If you're looking for some guidance on writing your own Personal Vision Statement, this is a great article. It's a fantastic exercise and a nice way to get grounded for the New Year, and for the rest of your life!
